There was a record high number of tourists in 2016, one of the key sectors of Cypriot economy, and there are optimistic forecasts for the year 2017. This was announced by Minister of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism George Lakkotripis while attending the World Travel Market of international tourism exhibition held in London.
According to Lakkotripis, for the first time the number of foreign tourists will exceed 3 million people by the end of the year. Speaking in the British capital to professionals in the tourism sector and potential investors, the minister and the leadership of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) noted that the annualized flow of tourists from the UK increased by 11.1% in the past year, from Russia – by 44.5%, from Israel – by 42.8%, while the influx of German and Ukrainian tourists rose by 6.6% and 26.8%, respectively.
It is noteworthy that the number of tourists in Nicosia increased by 6% this year, but higher rates are expected next year due to completion of the project for the Development of Eleftherias square, Old Town and the shopping areas of the capital.
In Limassol, the number of tourists in 2016 was higher by 18% compared to last year, and experts hope to keep up the good performance at least at the same level in the coming year.
